Wat Arun Ratchawararam, meaning Temple of Dawn, is also know locally as Wat Chaeng. The temple, which is named after the Indian God Aruna (God of Dawn) sits majestically on the Thonburi side (west bank) of the Chao Phraya River and is easily one of the most recognizable and memorable landmarks of Bangkok’s skyline. The most spectacular view of the glittering monument can be seen from the east side of the river at sunset as Wat Arun’s colorfully decorated spires sparkle radiantly over the water. Wat Arun was envisioned by King Taksin in 1768. It is believed that after fighting his way out of Ayutthaya, which was taken over by a Burmese army at the time, he arrived at this temple just as dawn was breaking. Wat Arun stands as arguably the most stunning temple in Bangkok because of its riverside location and its dazzling design. The grand pagoda (or prang in Thai) at Wat Arun, which is surrounded by four smaller pagodas, has the design features and structure of a Khmer-style pagoda. The 70-meter tall grand pagoda is beautifully decorated with tiny pieces of colored glass and Chinese porcelain placed delicately into intricate patterns. The Emerald Buddha used to be housed in one of the two small buildings located right in front of the Grand Pagoda before it was relocated to Wat Phra Kaew at the Grand Palace. Sculptures of Chinese soldiers and animals decorate the base of the grand pagoda.

Stunning one at Bangkok Thailand. I made many rounds day and night views. Preferably, take one day boat pass from Hop on Hop off boat pass to see so many attractions within 24 hours. One could spend half day to one day at Wat Arun itself. It’s a huge Temple with stunning views.... Many amenities provided within the Temple complex, ferry wharfs and around... Beautiful ????

Impressive. But full of people and noise. I almost recommend just to see from the outside rather than entering the temple. For women : be careful to have your legs dressed otherwise you will have to borrow (and pay) a long skirt for visiting.

Very beautiful and definitely worth the stop. Lovely design in all the temples and it is fun to see the plates and shells used throughout. Be careful when you pay your 50 baht. We gave the ticket taker 1000 baht and she insisted it was 100, no way to Confirm as the ticket box is all hidden under neath the shelf that serves as the ticket box. We added up all the money we left with for the day and our expenses to confirm.

Very well kept and maintained. The walls are painted white and glittering with gold statues. The weather, hot and dry, made it seem all the more majestic and untouchable. We were very intrigue by the stalls that were lining the path to the main stupas. The carrots and watermelons were carved by skillful hands creating amazing work of Art. The patience and effortlessness are the great virtues they exhibited. So much to learn and see just by observing.

It was a hot day in Bangkok. Wat Arun is a beautiful place. I was going to Wat Arun by the river using a boat. The boat was very scary but safe. There was a lot of tourists. They have kinda strict rules of the way you dress. You need to dress respectfully and not showing your skin too much. And please don't climbing to the pagoda.
