The Nieuwe Kerk is a 15th-century church in Amsterdam located on Dam Square, next to the Royal Palace. Formerly a Dutch Reformed Church parish, it now belongs to the Protestant Church in the Netherlands. Adjacent to the Royal Palace is Amsterdam Nieuwe Kerk, a church of the highest order. Akin to the Gothic churches of France, it was built circa 1400 due to the shortage of churches in the city and over the years, many changes have been made. The New Church remarkably managed to escape major damage in 1421 and 1452, the two great fires of Amsterdam, although two centuries later it was reduced to ashes when plumbers accidentally started a fire. The church however has been faithfully restored to its former glory, exhibiting the original early Renaissance style features throughout even though it remains tower-less.

As a church, it is an impressive building and worth a visit to see the windows, the carved wood and the organ but I had to pay to go round the exhibition to see them properly. On the other hand, I'm glad I went round the Suriname exhibition as I discovered how little I knew about the country. It's well presented and absorbing and again reminds us that the world is bigger and more diverse than our back gardens.

This is a tourist trap that you'll love. Believe me, because I've done it before. Now, the have changed it a new, very tech and media savvy Heineken "experience". Complete with slick waterproof beer bar and expansive gift shop. Half of the tour you stroll through the museum-like former brewery innards which describes the process. They employ young attractive Dutch docents that look like magazine models who speak perfect English. The other half of the tour they give an interactive video tour and set you on the yellow brick road to cash in your included 2 beers in the basement bar. You'll waddle through the "Heineken gift shop experience". Fun for the whole family...over 21.

One of my favourite exhibitions venues in Amsterdam. Today I went to visit the Surinam exhibition. My grandfather is from there and I am curious about the past and the Surinam slavery and colonial history. The exhibition meant a lot to me. It took me from sad to happy and from feeling amazed to feeling shocked. It will last till the 3rd of March. It is a Dutch/English exhibition. So if you are new to the theme you can learn a lot. It has my full recommendation.

I loved the huge impressive area of the New Church, and it was interesting seeing the 'family burials' rooms around the inside (many with closed doors). The gift store was extensive - I couldn't resist several containers of hilarious 'Last Supper" mints - don't miss them!
