Amsterdam has one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world called Hortus Botanicus. It was established in 1638 by the city municipality as Hortus Medicus, an herb garden with medical plants for Amsterdam doctors and pharmacists. The reasons for establishing a specialized medical garden were very serious: at that time the cities of Leiden and Utrecht experienced the plague epidemic (1634-1637) with thousands of victims. Additionally, several monasteries moved out of the quickly growing city and there was not enough space in Amsterdam to plant herbs. In the second half of the 17th century, the Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus garden already established at its present address (since 1682), had a rich collection of plants completely unknown in Europe. They were brought here from all over the world by the traders of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Some the plants from the Amsterdam botanic garden, as one single coffee plant, Coffea Arabica, or two small oil palms in pots brought to Hortus Botanicus, are seen today as the parents for the entire cultures of these plants which later expanded throughout the whole continents.

The best botanical garden that I ever been. It is very compact although it is wealthy and diverse in specimens. It it very easy to get there by a tram. In my opinion a best part is a building with a hundreds of butterflies. Close to the building could be found a dozens of freely walking gooses. One of the best places in Amsterdam.

We loved the gardens even though it was winter. The garden is nicely designed, the glass houses really interesting. There is a lovely butterfly house and shop. We also stopped for a snack in the cafe which we thoroughly enjoyed

Really cute botanical garden. It’s clam to be there and just look at the plants. I like the tropical room the most. The cafe inside is also recommended! We had a nice lunch there.

I have been here before in the summer and would have to say that it’s got the edge in June over November. That said it’s a great visit whenever. They have a 300 year old potted plant! A self guided tour of the history of flora. A very relaxing day out + nice cafe complete with cat. Highly recommend for a visit to anyone with or without kids. Plus it pushes you out into the prettier areas of Amsterdam.

Really beautiful botanical garden. A nice array of habitats and environments. I love the tropical greenhouse, whose muggy warmth reminds me of home. Exquisite. Well curated giftshop as well
