Artis, short for Natura Artis Magistra (Latin for "Nature is the teacher of the arts"), is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest zoos of mainland Europe. In addition to the zoo, Artis also contains an aquarium, a planetarium, an arboretum, and a fairly large art and sculpture collection. A part of the art collection is on display in the Aquarium building of the zoo. Artis contains 27 historically significant (listed) buildings, bridges, and ponds most of which are still used as animal enclosures, making it a unique place of 19th-century cultural heritage.

Pictures say more than words. wonderful day at the zoo. Super well maintained (including the toilets). Friendly staff, great construction of the enclosure. love to come back. A student discount is unfortunately only available for the universities in Amsterdam. But 25 € are acceptable.

This place takes the whole day to really go through. I loved it so much. The enclosures were big and the animals all seemed happy. There are even two open enclosures so you can interact with animals up close while still being safe as staff is there with you. We also got some snacks there and there are two cafes placed in great locations so you don't have to walk too far to get to either. They even have an aquarium and a planetarium. The aquarium isn't crazy big but it's still super nice and in a beautiful building. The butterfly exhibit and room full of the small monkeys was my favorite. The entry fee is definitely worth it. I wish I had know how long it would take us to walk through the entire place. It definitely will take up most of your day.

Amazing zoo, well worth a visit. Fantastic range of animals who were all more active than in any zoo I’ve visited before. Definitely a must see if you’re in Amsterdam!

Very fun for children and adults of all ages. There are lots of different animals from butterflies to seals. It is a great place to visit even when it is cold outside as lots of areas like the reptile, gorilla and butterfly houses are inside
